MOTU MOTU 8pre

Its really quite simple. For the money, this unit is nothing but 5 stars. I had no experience whatsoever and I started to make great recordings out of a spare bedroom. How did I do it? Simple.
1.) The 8pre has really good preamps, especially for the price.
2.) I studied how to make the bedroom into a good live room
3.) I bought good 200-350 dollar mics. Some were even $75.
4. I TOOK MY TIME and did careful positioning of instruments.

I know saying that I had no experience will make others say I have no right to say if these pres are good or not, but I'm not a brand slut. I dont need neve preamps for what I do. Of course they would be great and would tailor the music to a specific need, but for rock music, metal, jazz, country and pretty sparkly stuff, this thing will do just fine. Just take your time and you'll be fine. Especially if you only have 500-600 dollars to spend on an interface. For those that have more, spend more, but I'll have this baby for quite some time. I can compare it to previous successful recordings that I have done at expensive studios, and there isn't a whole lot of difference. Especially after I master what I record.

MOTU 1248 Thunderbolt Audio Interface

Let me start by qualifying myself for this review. I am a small-band gigging musician who strives to make the best possible experience for the audience while simplifying setup. I am a drummer and guitar player in two different bands for the pure pleasure of it. In both cases I play through a Bose L1 Model II most of the time. I play electric and acoustic guitar, and rely solely on amp modeling (Effectrode, 2 Note Torpedo Cab and Strymon products) rather than guitar amps. I play drums (VDrum TD-30) as well, and have relied heavily on the Motu Traveler MK3 and Hybrid MK3... in a large part due to the CUE system. There have been few alternatives to these compact powerhouses. However, I grew to become very familiar with their short-comings and aspired for something greater from MOTU, Mark Of The Unicorn, as I knew them back in the late 80's. I've waited nearly 2 years for a successor to MOTU's MK3 line. The Beringer X32 Rack came along, but I decided to pass because of it's larger size. I needed the single rack space I had grown acustom to.

This interface and the MOTU support system are erratic. The device icon in Audio MIDI Setup installs correctly the first time. Then, in a later session, it appears duplicated and numbered as #2, and the original icon is grayed out. This breaks the connections of all MIDI controllers connected to the original device.

Throughout various permutations it became clear that this is a persistent problem, requiring reconfiguration of the MIDI setup each time the computer and interface are powered off and back on. Initially, MOTU was enthusiastic and assured me that I should forward any questions to them. However, after a few emails, they went silent.

The official technical notes I entered into their support system remain unread (as of this writing). Tech support at MOTU has consistently stated that their products work correctly, and any issues are due to other factors. This may be true - in any event they do not necessarily work with the customer until the problem is resolved. I rate this product a two. It fails as a MIDI interface. It works adequately as a professional audio only interface.

FastLane's unique advantage: a MIDI thru button allows you to play to your gear even when your computer is turned off--without having to disconnect cables. No other USB interface offers this feature for this price.

FastLane takes full advantage of USB, giving you increased MIDI throughput, better timing accuracy, support for "hot-swapping" and plug-and-play expansion. Need to connect another sound module or synth? No problem. Just add another FastLane via a standard USB hub. Or mix and match FastLane with our other multi-port USB interfaces, such as the affordable 4-IN, 6-OUT micro express.

FastLane is specially engineered to operate with multiple USB devices, so your software will never lose contact with it, regardless of how many times you restart your computer or how many other USB devices you connect.

FastLane's in and out status lights for each MIDI port provide quick visual confirmation of MIDI transmission. No power supply or batteries required. Includes USB cable.

MOTU MOTU He-Man Masters of the Universe Classics Evil Beast Deluxe Figure Griffin

Mattel's Masters of the Universe Classics line was successful in using many shared bodies with new heads and armor pieces to create a large variety of different figures, much like the vintage line. When they decided to begin using the same method to create beasts, Mattel also patterned their construction off of the vintage line where Battle Cat and Panthor were the exact same reuse of the tiger from Mattel's older Big Jim line. In MOTUC, Battle Cat and Panthor shared the same body with new heads, helmets, and color schemes. Building on this, Mattel began concentrating on creating creatures which could share large amounts of parts. Now we have the Griffin introduced into the line, a flying beast from the early 2000s Mike Young Productions cartoon that was shown carrying the evil warriors into battle. Like the mythological creature this toy is inspired by, this Griffin is a combination of the Battle Cat/Panthor body, the wings from Swiftwind, and some newly sculpted pieces. The result is a fearsome creature which should look great on your display shelf.

You're simply not going to find the bang-for-the-buck that the MOTU 8pre USB packs in the next 8-channel preamp you run across. If you've already got a recording interface with light pipe input, then the 8pre USB is exactly what you need to flesh out your system. If this is your first interface, then congratulations - this thing totally rules! Seriously, what's the point of getting an 8-channel interface if the preamps are substandard?

That's exactly what separates the 8pre USB from the rest. You'd be hard pressed to find a set of eight preamps that sound this good, even if you spent twice the scratch - and that's not even taking the MOTU 8pre USB's killer extras, such as 16-channels of MIDI I/O, complete SMPTE time code sync, and full hardware/software integration into account.
